Employement Resources

Everybody's route to independent living is unique. We assist people to improve skill level, expand socialization, and plan for the future as they take on the responsibilities involved in each of the below options.

Some individuals may choose to continue living in their own family home. For example, an individual still in high school can attend classes and live at home, while Community Support Services staff provide community living and vocational training in preparation for a move to a more independent living situation.

Individuals may decide to live in a family-like home, also referred to as a group home, where they have their own bedroom, but share the kitchen, bathrooms, and living area. A home manager who lives on-site and instructors support people as they learn social and daily living skills such as cooking, housekeeping, budgeting, and shopping.

Others choose to live in more independent supervised apartments which are located in apartment complexes or are managed by Black Hills Workshop. A home manager lives on-site and instructors assist everyone in his or her own apartment (normally shared with a roommate). The goal is increased independence.

Even more independence is available in supported apartments which are located in apartment buildings throughout the community.  Some individuals even rent houses with support from Black Hills Workshop. Instructions and monitoring are provided based on individual need. Supported living staff assist with budgets, medical coordination, and other concerns as needed.

Accessible units are available.

We have established rooms in four of our group homes to provide respite care to individuals served by Black Hills Workshop. Respite services may be necessary when an individual living independently requires short term care, such as following illness. For individuals living with their parents, respite is an option if their parents travel, are ill, or otherwise need time away. Individuals wishing to explore residential options may want to spend a night in respite to experience group home living.

Many of the people served by Black Hills Workshop are able to live independently despite severe disabilities. Community Support Services staff provide the support they need to be successful.
